Here's What's Happening in Kindergarten!


*Review upper and lowercase letters and their sounds
*Retell a story (discuss story elements such as characters, setting, plot, problem, solution, and author's message).
*Discuss the difference between fiction and non-fiction books
*Read to develop fluency through choral reading
* Look at picture clues and "stretching out' words to determine unknown words.
*Remaining letters to learn: Ww,Jj,Xx,Vv,Qq,Yy,Zz

*Continue practice of writing first and last name
*Writing Prompts: writing 1-3 sentences with a picture to match about a book read or a family experience
*Practice writing sight words


*Counting and drawing sets of numerals 1-20 (ex: give your child a number and ask them to draw on paper: could be something simple like small circles. make sure they count as they draw to ensure their set is the correct number).
*Playing counting games with a partner
*Numbers that are one more and one less up to 100 (Also use vocabulary: before and after)
* Review positional words: on, above, behind, below, next to
*Review shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, and circle)
*Arrange sets from least to greatest and greatest to least
*Count to 100 by ones and tens
*Identify coins: penny, nickel, dime, and quarter(practice counting pennies and understanding that five pennies equals a nickel and ten pennies equals a dime.
*Practice adding and subtracting two sets of numbers (you can help your child with visuals by drawing pictures or using simple things around the house)

Social Studies and Science

*Our IB Learning Profile this month is "How We Organize Ourselves"
*Discuss differences between living and non-living things (in class, we learned that living things: grow, breathe, use energy, and reproduce. Activities you can do together is look at books and identify living and non-living as well as make a collage using magazines and flyers.
