Curriculum Focus for January of 2017
In math, students are starting the Fractions Computation Unit. They are learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators. This is a very complicated unit that requires focus and practice. Students will have lots of practice they can do at home if they choose to do so. Extra practice can always be found in their math folders. We will also be multiplying and dividing fractions in this unit.
students are studying unit 4 which focuses on mastering skills on main idea and supporting details in nonfiction text. We are also studying text structures such as description, cause/effect, compare/ contrast, problem/solution, and chronological order.
In writing, the
students will write for a specific purpose. They will be writing a lot using the text structures mentioned above in reading. The students will also complete a five paragraph essay this quarter.
In science, the
students have been studying a unit on Rocks and a unit on Changes in the Earth's Surface. We are starting a unit on Matter at this time.
In social studies,
students are beginning a unit on the western region of the US. They will study the states and capitals of the region, the land, the water, climate, natural resources, important industries, most famous landmarks, and the history of the west.
